Just as February is the month of love , March is certainly the month of women, when International Women's Day is celebrated .

Do you know why March 8th was chosen for International Women's Day? To retrace the origins of this celebration, we need to take a little journey back in time to the early 1900s... Let's go!

The history of Women's Day: why March 8th?

The Women's Congress in Copenhagen in 1910 was the moment when the celebration dedicated to the female sex was made official , but not its date. At this juncture, in fact, the American socialists proposed dedicating a day to the theme of women's struggle and emancipation , as had happened on February 28 of the previous year in the USA.

In those years there were many demonstrations and initiatives with women as protagonists: the early twentieth century saw many women take to the streets all over the world , demanding equal rights and universal suffrage.

One event above all was crucial and always linked to International Women's Day: the death of 123 women workers in the Triangle factory fire in New York on March 25, 1911.

It was actually a dramatic event that was part of other political and social events that occurred in that period and culminated in the uprising of 8 March 1917 in St. Petersburg , in which women raised awareness among the population on issues of emancipation after the end of the First World War.

After this date, in 1917, there was the Russian February Revolution which led to the collapse of Tsarism, with the decision to establish March 8 as World Workers' Day in 1921 , a date later chosen by several states to celebrate Women's Day.

Despite this, it was only in 1977 that the international importance of the celebration was recognized , in order to recognize the role of women in the search for peace and in the desire to end discrimination.

Mimosa cake and Giacomazzi artisanal pastry shop

The undisputed symbol of this day is the mimosa, a flower that can also be transformed into... a cake! :) The mimosa cake is in fact the traditional dessert of March 8th that is inspired by the particular yellow flower, one of the classic "grandmother's desserts", as they say.
